Groups.io: Changelog
October 16, 2026
Public Pages & Help
- CHANGE: On the groups.io home page, the only button was Get Started for FREE, which goes to the Pricing page, so members who came to log in clicked it and couldn't find their way in. On phones, the Log In link was also hidden in the menu. The home page now has a Log In button next to Get Started for FREE, and a note for existing members with a link to the how-to-log-in video. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41399
- CHANGE: The two buttons on the groups.io home page weren't labelled, and the Log In button was a pale outline next to the solid green Get Started for FREE button. Each button now has a heading saying who it's for: "New to Groups.io?" above Get Started for FREE, and "Already a member of a group?" above Log In. Log In is now a solid blue button, with the how-to-log-in video link under it. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41423
- NEW: A new Security page, also at groups.io/security, summarizes how Groups.io protects your groups and data: where data is hosted, encryption, account security, monitoring, backups, incident response, and how we use AI. It also lists the documents institutions can request for a security review, such as our HECVAT and VPAT. It's linked from the sidebar on the Terms, Privacy Policy, and other policy pages.
- CHANGE: The Subprocessors page, last revised in 2018, has been brought up to date. Each subprocessor now says what it does for Groups.io instead of "Cloud Service Provider". AI providers have their own section, which notes that their terms do not let them train on the data we send. Spur, used to check IP addresses to prevent fraud and abuse, and Tailscale are now listed, and Google is listed for both mobile push notifications and support email.
Site-wide
- BUGFIX: Quotes and other special characters in topic subjects, file and folder names and descriptions, chat member names, and pending message senders could break the menus and confirmation windows that use them. These are now handled correctly everywhere.

Highlights
- A large round of accessibility improvements across the site brings it toward the WCAG 2.1 AA standard, including a Skip to main content link, full keyboard support, clearer focus rings and higher-contrast colors.
- Enterprise groups can now have subgroups of their own, one level deep, and the
/createsubgroupand/getsubgroupsendpoints support them. - New API endpoints manage member labels, and
/getmembersand/searchmemberscan filter members the same way the Members page does. - Draft saving is more reliable: dropped connections and lost confirmations no longer leave the editor re-sending old saves or silently not saving.
- Sending a topic or reply now shows Sending... and disables the button, and sending a message no longer shows a false Sending is taking longer than expected notice.
Messages & Topics
- BUGFIX: After you scrolled down a Topics or Messages page far enough to load more, the page didn't clean up after itself when you went to another page, so parts of the old page could keep running in the background. In the mobile app, the handlers that hide the bottom bar when the keyboard opens also piled up as you moved between pages. Pages now clean up properly when you leave them.
- INTERNAL: Pressing a key while a long Topics or Messages page was still loading no longer causes a JavaScript error.
Editor & Drafts
- BUGFIX: If a draft save reached our servers but the confirmation didn't make it back to your browser, the editor kept re-sending that old save. Each attempt was refused so it wouldn't overwrite the newer copy, and you saw a "There was an error saving the draft" warning counting down to 240 seconds. While that went on, nothing new you typed was saved. We now recognize a repeat of a save that already went through, and the editor keeps saving normally. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41365
- BUGFIX: If a draft save got stuck on a dropped connection, the editor waited for it forever. It stopped saving your draft without any warning, so posting from Drafts could send an older version. A stuck save now gives up after 30 seconds, shows the retry warning, and tries again. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41364
- CHANGE: Clicking Send on a new topic, a reply, or a private message to a member now shows "Sending…" and disables the button until the page moves on. Before, a reply's Send button silently ignored further clicks if the first send stalled, and on new topics each click sent again. If sending takes more than 30 seconds, a message asks you to check your connection, and if the page doesn't change, to see whether your message was posted before sending it from Drafts. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41364
- BUGFIX: If your login expired while you were writing a message, your later typing could be lost, and the editor kept trying to save without telling you. The editor now keeps what you've written and tells you that your login has expired, with a link to log in again in a new tab so you can come back and send it. Likes and poll votes made after your login has expired now show an error instead of appearing to work.
- BUGFIX: Posting more than 25 new topics in 10 minutes now shows a message asking you to wait a few minutes, instead of the New Topic form appearing to do nothing.
- BUGFIX: In groups without a subject tag, direct messages between members didn't have
[DM]at the start of the subject. They now do. - BUGFIX: After you sent a new topic, reply, or private message, the "Sending is taking longer than expected" message often appeared about 30 seconds later, even though the message had been sent. It could show up on whatever page you had moved on to, such as a member's page or another message. It now appears only when a send is actually still in progress after 30 seconds. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41375
Members
- BUGFIX: On the Members page, the member label and color filters were ignored when you also entered a search term or sorted by a custom member data column, so the results included members without the selected labels or colors. Those filters now apply to searches and custom-column sorts too.
- API NEW: Added member label endpoints:
/getmemberlabelslists a group's labels,/creatememberlabelcreates one,/updatememberlabelchanges a label's name, description, or color, and/deletememberlabeldeletes one. They require themanage_memberspermission, and labels cannot be created in Basic groups. - API NEW:
/getmembersand/searchmemberscan now filter the members they return. Thefilterparameter takes the same filters as the Members page (email delivery, posting status, message selection, not confirmed, and others),label_idsreturns members with any of the given labels, andcolorsreturns members with any of the given colors.label_idsandcolorsrequire themanage_memberspermission. - API CHANGE:
/searchmembersnow returns each member'smember_labels, as/getmembersalready did. - CHANGE: When a moderator sends a message to a single member from the Members page or a member's page, the subject now starts with
[DM], as it does for messages members send each other from a profile. Before, these messages had only the group's subject tag, so they looked at first like they had been sent to the whole group. Messages a moderator sends to several members at once are unchanged. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41340 - BUGFIX: When a moderator changed a member's email address, the Member Account Change Notification sent to that group's moderators said "A moderator in another group changed…", even though the change was made by a moderator of that same group. The notification now names the moderator who made the change, as it already did for display name changes. Other groups the member belongs to still get "A moderator in another group changed…". https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/41348
